Of course, I had to practice my mouse movements a few times beforehand so I could move as efficiently as possible before recording the video.Īfter I captured and saved my movie, I opened it in QuickTime Pro so I could add some movie info, trim the edges, and tidy it up in general. To capture the video, I simply switched from "image" mode to "video" mode, pressed the capture hot key, designated the area of the screen I wanted to record (you have a number of options in this area), and went to work. The short AVI clip is really self-explanatory and would be a terrific addition to any Photoshop tutorial.

I took a few minutes to play around with this function and created a little movie that shows how to convert a BMP file to a JPG in Photoshop. Although the functionality of this mode isn't as extensive as TechSmith's "Camtasia," I found SnagIt's streamlined version very useful.Įssentially, when you're in the video mode, you can record all of the activity on your screen and save it as an AVI movie. The video capture mode is a real bonus in what is basically a screen capture application. SnagIt saves files in the AVI format, which can be edited with your favorite video editing software, including TechSmith's own "Camtasia." The video runs 52 seconds and is a 1.3 MB file. The video was created using SnagIt to record screen activity for converting a BMP file to a JPG in Photoshop. Here's short video that can be viewed with the QuickTime plug-in or player.

Then you can export or print it for immediate use.įigure 2. You can also highlight areas with a yellow highlighter "pen." Once you've modified the image to your liking, you can save it as a studio document for further changes at a later date. In SnagIt Studio you can add arrows, callouts, text blocks, and a variety of clipart goodies. The studio is a toy chest of object-based vector drawing tools that allows you to annotate and enhance your captured image. SnagIt grabs the image and presents it to you in a preview window.Īt this point, you can either send the image to the printer, send it as an e-mail attachment, save it to the clipboard, save it to a variety of file formats, or send it to SnagIt Studio for mark-up. SnagIt allows you to capture an entire screen, a window, or a specified area that you choose with the cursor.

The function that most people will use most of the time is the image capture mode. SnagIt's interface is the model of simplicity. Beyond that, the application also has "video" and "editable text" modes for even more flexibility.įigure 1. SnagIt not only lets you easily capture anything that's on your Windows screen, it provides you with a host of tools to modify, mark-up, and export your images to a variety of file formats. That is, unless you've discovered "SnagIt," an advanced screen capture program from TechSmith. But within the standard Windows environment, you don't really have a lot of options for tailoring your screenshots to meet the particular needs of your project. Screenshots are particularly helpful and don't require a college degree in technical drawing. Well-placed illustrations can save you lots of verbiage while adding interest to your tutorial. But even the best writers have difficulty repeatedly explaining which button to click or window to open without the text descending to the depths of utter boredom. The Web is a terrific resource for helpful tutorials.
